Girl Walks Into a Bar

After watching “Girl Walks Into a Bar” last night I found a new style I wanted experiment with. By no means a completely originals style, but something I’ve rarely used. “Girl…” was released directly to the internet by Sebastian Gutierrez scribe to “Snakes on a Plane”. I don’t know if it was an official tagline, but someone billed the movie as: “Ten bars. One night.” Using just those locations and an equal number of scenes Gutierrez ably crafted an interesting and humorous story. Fewer scenes prevented the piece from becoming cluttered and unruly.

I need to work on my scene work to begin with. I can see an entire story in my mind’s eye, but I often lose track when I get down to the nitty-gritty.

The Tragedie of Cymbeline

In the first folio Cymbeline was considered a tragedy which is hard to believe after seeing the Fiasco Theatre’s hilarious rendition of it at the New Vic last week. I knew little about the show before seeing it which made the experience more exciting.

Like Shakespeare’s other romances, Cymbeline contains a heavy dose of deus ex machine. The show was more of a romp than anything else: Cloten’s death received more laughs than any joke in the play (possibly due to Fiasco’s inventive staging). The actors were wonderful at bouncing between the characters in the play; Fiasco only had six players performing all the parts. Using a smaller cast heightened the comedic elements especially during the final confrontation when every character was on stage. I am definitely seeing their next production.

I’m glad I started this project. I never would have seen Cymbeline otherwise. It’s not a widely referenced piece, not a history, and therefore not on my radar.

Went for a run with Edgens this evening. We met with the North Brooklyn Runners (NBR) in McCarren Park.

Despite only hearing of them today I have already mentally designed t-shirts and catchphrases for them.

NBR for PBR. It just makes sense.

New Year’s Resolutions

1. See a production/recording/film of each of Shakespeare’s plays within the year. Try to avoid adaptions (e.g. 10 Things I Hate About You).
2. Limit my quoting of things. Unless it’s stock prices.
3. Avoid the near occasion of cyncism.

bedford avenue

This street has a bad reputation. Most people (at least the ones I am in contact with) associate it with Williamsburg, or more specifically, a certain brand of young person living near that street in Williamsburg. I realized recently that there is more to Bedford Avenue geographically than the northern most tip in Williamsburg and therefore there must be more to its character. Bedford Ave. stretches from Manhattan Ave (the start of Greenpoint, perhaps?) along Prospect Park straight down to Sheepshead Bay. That’s a long way.

I want to get to know it.
